Microsoft officially unveiled the new Windows Terminal in 2019, and it has been shown to be a big upgrade over the Windows Console Host command line we use today. There are new features and enhancements to make the command line even better. The best of all is a modernized rendering engine with DirectX GPU acceleration. The Windows Terminal is designed to be your one-stop shop for all your command line applications. So you can do that from the Windows Terminal, you can do it by the command prompt, or Putty, or any command line. Other cool features include tab support, transparency effect, and split panes for utilizing multiple command lines in single window. There’s a fully customizable window for how to change the Terminal’s style, font size, color and more, so it would look very personalized to the Windows Terminal. The Windows Terminal is available for download from the Microsoft Store, and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. You even choose the Windows Terminal to be your default command-line application now. It won’t be automatically available until 2022 when Microsoft will make that change—only for Windows 11).
