In May a financial report revealed that there were “several new SteamWorld games” in development. Here’s a first look at one of them. It was called SteamWorld Headhunter, and is apparently a “scrumptious, colourful, three-person co-op action adventure” with a head-popping twist. The video trailer shows a wild west shootout between two robots, which was literal. The SteamWorld series has avoided settling on a genre for any length of time. Image & Formnow and Thunderful Games also merged with the Thunderful Games, sprang from tower defense to 2D metroidvania to turn-based tactics across the various Steamworld games. “The robot setting opens up many possibilities,” says Brjann Sigurgeirsson, head of the studio for our 2017 profile. If your own world is established, or a setting or the setting, then you’ll be able to change it more or more for yourself, but instead it gives you the freedom to experiment with every other parameter. If you know how your world and your characters are working, then you don’t need to worry too much about this aspect. And if you are familiar with your ideas and are not taught what to expect, they can be surprised by all other things you have thought up. To celebrate the show, Steamworld Dig 2 is available for a limited time on Steam and GOG, but you’ll need to grab it before you take it.
